At some point we hope to have letters that you can simply sign, add some personal details to and send out.
In the meantime, we gathered some helpful tips from the American Civil Liberties Union website.
- Keep the letter brief, no longer than one page.
- Start by saying who you are and what you want up front.
- In this case what we want is a more accessible world.
- If there’s a specific area that you’ve noticed is incredible inaccessible that helps as well since it’s a concrete ask.
- Pick 3 of your strongest points that support the need for increased accessibility.
- Tell your elected official why it matters to their community.
- If the inaccessibility has personally affected you or a loved one include that as well.
- If you’ve ever voted for that elected official or volunteer on their campaign or have any relationship to them here’s the part where you point it out.
- Remember, be courteous, but take a firm position.
